We are very pleased to welcome new Canadian artist Phyllis Koppel to ArtBeat Gallery and to Canada as well. The paintings created by this new Canadian artist are all original works of art mounted on framed canvas. Phyllis' paintings explore cultural themes that many different cultures have in common. The most charming examples of this type of cross cultural subject matter are the paintings of clay pots from all over the world.
This is a wonderful way to bring differing cultures from around the world together to celebrate their differences and also their similarities of events, objects, function and form.
As a brand new Canadian, Phyllis has absolutely captured the spirit of Canadianism. Diversity, inclusion and admiration for all people of all ethnicity.

ABOUT PHYLLIS KOPPEL

Phyllis Koppel was born in Mexico City to American parents and now has chosen Canada as her home.  She spent her formative years there and then moved to San Diego, California with her family.  Always the avid traveller, she intended to take a year off between high school and university to see the world.  Instead, she travelled to Israel where she decided to settle for the next five years. Eventually she returned to San Diego to study visual arts with an emphasis on photography at the University of California, San Diego.

Photography took her to New York City where she documented causes of poverty and social injustice in the early 90’s.  That same need to speak and represent the less fortunate led her to join the U.S. Peace Corps in 1992 where her tour of duty took her to the Caribbean island of St. Kitts.  As a volunteer, she taught visual arts to high school students, organized island-wide student exhibitions and served as vice-president of the newly created St. Kitts Art Teachers’ Association.  Having finished her tour, the government of St. Kitts asked her to stay on and granted her permanent residency.  She remained in St. Kitts for another twelve years.  It was during these years that Phyllis took up painting, informed primarily by the colors and shapes around her, always trying to find the simple things that unite us as cultures.

Phyllis recently arrived in Canada to pursue painting full time.  Her work has concentrated on the themes of cultures and their implements, in this case, vessels, pots and vases.  Her first series is a study of clay pots used by different cultures, usually residing in dark forgotten places.  From there, she created a series of 10 portraits depicting the cultures she found in Toronto.  The portraits are tightly cropped, the subject head-on.  Highly textured pieces of clothing or head gear identify the sitter’s culture.  Currently, she is working on a series which marries the themes above by showing different cultures using pots in various ways, always as a means of survival, the underlying metaphor of this new body of work.
